In the modern era of aviation, there are many forms of aircraft that one may pilot, ranging from small private helicopters to large commercial airliners. However, many aircraft operate differently from one another, and some require special types of positions and/or licenses for operation. When getting into piloting, it is important to know what type of aircraft that you want to train for, ensuring that you get the education and practice necessary for safe flight. One of the first choices that you will have to make is whether you wish to pilot fixed-wing aircraft or rotary-wing aircraft, both of which are very distinct groups with different capabilities and applications.
When discussing a fixed-wing aircraft, one is referring to any airplane or heavier-than-air flying machine that creates lift through the shape of its wings and forward airspeed. Despite their name, the wings of fixed-wing aircraft are not always rigid, as kites, hang gliders, and other similar aircraft fall under the same category. A majority of fixed-wing aircraft are operated by a pilot, while others are unmanned and controlled through remote controls or autonomous systems.
The airplane is the most common type of fixed-wing aircraft that most are familiar with, a category containing trainers, private jets, commercial airlines, military fighters, and much more. These aircraft primarily generate propulsion from a jet engine or propeller, and they may widely vary in their size, shape, and wing configuration. In general, fixed-wing aircraft are either known for their speed or endurance, allowing pilots to traverse short or long distances with ease. Most fixed-wing aircraft require a runway or long ground surface to build enough speed to takeoff and land, and they are generally unable to conduct vertical takeoffs and landings, nor hover. As such, fixed-wing aircraft commonly find use for passenger and cargo transportation, recreation, research, and defense.
Rotary-wing aircraft are also heavier-than-air aircraft, though they differ from their fixed-wing counterparts with the fact that their lift is generated by rotor blades spinning around a vertical mast. Helicopters are the most prevalent rotary-blade aircraft, though autogyros, gyrodynes, and rotor kites are also situated in the family. Unlike fixed-wing aircraft, rotary-wing aircraft such as the helicopter are able to conduct vertical takeoff and landing with their 360 degrees of freedom, greatly increasing their abilities to operate in certain environments such as dense cities. Additionally, helicopters and similar aircraft do not require much space for lifting off and landing, furthering their ability to be used in constricted spaces. As a result, rotary-wing aircraft may be used for search and rescue operations, law enforcement, surveying, and much more. Despite their various benefits, they can be more limited in their speed, and some will not be able to perform transportation tasks to the degree of bigger fixed-wing aircraft, limiting the amount of people and goods they can transfer at one time.
